Picture this: a crisp winter morning in the alpine hills of Oberon, a clever dog darting between oak trees, nose pressed to the earth, and then, a signal. Beneath the soil, one of the world's most prized ingredients is waiting to be found. This is truffle hunting at RedGround Australia, and it's every bit as thrilling as it sounds.

Australia's Most Unique Truffle Farm

Nestled in Oberon, NSW, about 30mins from Bloomhill Escape, RedGround sits in the cool alpine tablelands of the Central West. The farm is unlike any other truffle operation in the country. It's the only truffière in Australia growing four distinct culinary truffle species: the French Black (Périgord), Bianchetto (White), Burgundy, and Winter truffles.

That variety means RedGround isn't just a winter destination. While most truffle farms close their gates outside of June through August, RedGround is the first Australian truffière to offer bookable experiences across most of the year, including summer twilight hunts for its rarer varieties.

What Happens on a Truffle Hunt

This isn't a walk through a gift shop. A truffle hunt at RedGround is a full sensory experience from start to finish.

Out in the Field

You'll be guided through the truffière alongside trained truffle dogs who do what no human nose can. They pinpoint ripe truffles buried beneath the root systems of inoculated oak trees. Your guide explains the science of how truffles grow, what to look for, and how to harvest them without damaging the mycelium network underground.

Back at the Lodge

After the hunt, you head to the bespoke Truffle Hunting Lodge for a cleaning demonstration and a tasting session. Think fireside warmth, truffle-infused bites, and a genuine appreciation for what just came out of the ground twenty minutes ago. It's farm-to-table in the most literal sense.

Four Truffles, One Farm

Most people are only familiar with the Black Périgord truffle, the one you see shaved over pasta in fine-dining restaurants. At RedGround, you get access to the full family.

French Black (Périgord)

The most celebrated truffle in the world. Intensely earthy, musky, and deeply aromatic. Harvested through winter.

Bianchetto (White)

Lighter and garlicky with a sharp, pungent edge. A summer variety, rare in Australian production.

Burgundy

A European autumn truffle with a nutty, chocolate-like depth. Another variety that sets RedGround apart from competitors.

Winter Truffle

Milder than the Périgord but still complex and aromatic. A gem of the cold-season harvest.

When to Go

The 2026 Winter Truffle Season opens on Saturday, 6 June 2026. The peak season for Black Périgord and Winter truffles runs from June through August, but RedGround's summer varieties mean experiences are available across other months too. Check the website for current availability and seasonal schedules.

One important note: bookings are essential and require at least 14 days' lead time. This isn't a drop-in attraction. Plan ahead.

How to Get There

RedGround is located at 264 Titania Rd, Oberon, NSW 2787. It's roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Sydney and sits within easy reach of the Blue Mountains region, making it a natural add-on to a broader Central West road trip.
